My Top 5 Favorite Seed Companies

If you are new to gardening or overwhelmed by all of the seed catalogs out there, I’m here to help you narrow it down to the best seed companies that I have purchased from.  So if you have a mountain of seed catalogs on your kitchen table because you don’t know where to start or what to choose, read on.

This is by no means a complete list, but I have personally ordered from these companies and have had great results.  So if your favorite seed company isn’t on here, don’t be offended!  But feel free to comment below and share your good experiences with other companies.

It’s that time of year for me to sit down with my cup of coffee and go over all of the seed catalogs for the year.  There are some I don’t even bother to open, but if they catch my eye with their cover, it gets me every time.  It’s eye candy, yep.  I know some of you are shaking your head at the thought of seed catalog covers being eye candy.  I have been known to line them all up and do a little photo shoot…

Here are my favorites that I actually use, not what so-and-so said was good so they must be good.

1.  Johnny’s Selected Seeds

Hands down my all time favorite seed company!  Not only do they have a plethora of seed varieties, they have a ton of educational videos, a seed calculator, and other informative stuff on their website.  They do send out free catalogs every year which I love.  It reminds me of Christmas time when I was a kid.  I used to circle the toys I wanted in the JCPenney toy catalog(did I just reveal my age?).  Only this time I’m circling Chocolate Mint, Mexican Gherkins and a new warted winter squash variety.

I also love Johnny Seeds because they have bulk orders as well as small, one packet options.  I have a 1/2 acre garden, so this is very important!  If you haven’t tried Johnny Seeds, you are really missing out!

2.  Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

If I was a betting woman, I would bet on this company’s catalog cover as being the prettiest.  But, besides being pretty, they have so many heirloom varieties and their prices are exceptional!  I also like that many of their varieties have bulk order options.  I always get my Tigger melon seeds from Baker Creek.  If you can grow a melon, try out these pretty little things!

3.  Everwilde Farms

This company does not have a catalog, which is a bummer for me, but they do have great heirloom seeds.  Each packet comes in a pretty package that has a ziploc for longer storage.  When I first got their seed packets, I confess, I had another photo shoot.  Besides the pretty package, their seeds always do well in my garden and yes, you guessed it, I can order in bulk.  They also have great prices!  Gone are the days when I only bought one tiny packet of beans and cucumbers.  Now I have two 50 foot rows of cucumbers and five 50 foot rows of beans.

4.  R.H. Shumway’s

If you like that old time feel in a seed company, this is it!  R.H. Shumway’s has a lot of old varieties that can be hard to find, tried and true varieties and most if not all are heirloom varieties.  Plus, they’ve been in business for 148 years.  Pretty cool!  I get my Rattlesnake watermelon seeds from them.  It’s my all time favorite watermelon variety and if you like a ton of watermelons, you can order in bulk as well.  We actually got sick of eating watermelon last year.  Can you imagine?

5.  Territorial Seed Company

I do not order very often from this company, but if you are looking for a lot to choose from, this would be it.  I love their variety and if I want to try something new, it’s usually from this company.  The drawback is that they are a bit more expensive than the other seed companies I mentioned.  But do your own comparisons between companies.  Not only does it save you money, you learn about different seed varieties.

And there you have it!  Check out these companies and see what you think.  You can also order free catalogs from each except Everwilde Farms.  If you are like me, I like tangible stuff.  What are your favorite seed companies?
